Breast augmentation is the most common plastic surgery procedure in the United States. As a woman begins to age, certain lifestyle factors like pregnancy and weight loss can cause their breasts to lose firmness, shape, and volume. Other times, many patients are unsatisfied with the natural size or shape of their breasts and look into undergoing plastic surgery to improve their appearance. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure that can enhance a woman’s bust to help them look and feel more feminine and attractive.

Benefits of Breast Augmentation
Enhanced Volume
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight loss, and gravity can all lead to small breasts or cause them to droop below the chest. Breast augmentation can restore fullness and volume to the breasts for a more youthful and perkier appearance.
Improved Body Proportions
Sometimes a woman’s breasts can become asymmetrical and appear unbalanced. Breast augmentation can position the breasts to create a more balanced figure and improve the overall body proportions.
Boost in Self-Esteem
Many women can feel self-conscious and embarrassed about their breasts over time. Breast augmentation can restore a woman’s feminine figure and confidence as she enjoys the way her new breasts look and feel.
Your Breast Augmentation Procedure
Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Ackerman will evaluate the condition of your breasts as well as your physical stature, skin condition, and chest measurement to determine the correct implant size, type, and placement to help you achieve your desired results.
Implant Options
Saline
- Composed of a soft, silicone shell filled with saline solution
- Filled during surgery so the volume can be adjusted and the implant is inserted through a small incision
- Creates a slightly firmer feel than silicone implants
- Implant rippling is more likely to occur
Silicone
- Composed of a silicone shell filled with silicone gel
- Feels more natural than saline implants
- Less likely to rupture than saline, but it is more difficult to detect
- An MRI is recommended every three years
Incision Location
The incision location will depend on certain factors, such as implant size, breast aesthetics, and implant placement. You should evaluate before and after photos to assess the quality of a surgeon’s incision techniques before your surgery. As always, Dr. Ackerman will discuss which approach will best suit your needs.
Concerns
Recovery
Following your breast augmentation, you will be asked to wear a surgical bra to protect your new contours and minimize swelling. Usually there is minimal swelling and bruising that will resolve after a few days. Make sure to avoid all strenuous activities for at least a few weeks. Most of our patients can drive a car and return to office-type work in a few days after surgery.
Results
You can expect long-lasting and natural-looking results that will enhance the appearance of your breasts and improve your self-esteem. Your final results will become apparent approximately one year after your surgery.
Scars
Dr. Ackerman will make sure to place incisions in the most inconspicuous locations possible. Any scarring that does occur can be hidden underneath clothing and will likely fade over time.
Pain
You may experience some moderate discomfort during your recovery. Dr. Ackerman will prescribe oral medication to help minimize the pain.
